India’s renewable energy sector achieved explosive, record-breaking growth in the first nine months of 2025, primarily fueled by a massive surge in solar deployment.
According to JMK Research, the country installed a total of 29.5 GW of solar and 4.96 GW of wind capacity between January and September. The utility-scale solar segment was the main driver, adding 22.5 GW—a 70.3% jump over the same period in 2024—with fully half of that capacity (11.1 GW) commissioned in the third quarter alone.
This dramatic expansion was mirrored in the consumer market, where rooftop solar additions surged 81.6% year-on-year to reach 5.8 GW. This installation frenzy pushed India’s total renewable energy (RE) capacity to a landmark 247.3 GW as of September 2025, per Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) data. Solar power now clearly dominates the national RE mix, accounting for 52% of the total capacity, significantly outpacing wind (21%) and large hydro (20%).
